Gladys Afolayan is the founder and CEO of Creative Mindz Beauty Center and Kulture Institute of Cosmetology in Calgary, Alberta. As a certified and licensed cosmetology instructor, she is the first black female entrepreneur to launch a black hair school in Alberta, promoting inclusivity and diversity in the beauty industry.

With over 20 years in the beauty industry, Gladys has done it all. She has worked behind the chair as a stylist, coordinated cosmetology programs, taught as an instructor, owned a salon, and freelanced as a hair stylist. Her spirited personality and her passion for her craft makes her a beloved instructor both in the salon and the classroom.

Through her “Bridging the Gap” program, Gladys addresses the Eurocentric focus in Alberta’s cosmetology curriculum & the need for more diversity in the industry. She teaches a balanced curriculum for a diverse community, runs an annual summer braiding bootcamp for black youth and Afro-textured immigrants, and helps mothers of Afro-textured children with daily haircare routines.

Gladys was featured in Disruptors Magazine as one of the Top 20 Female Entrepreneurs to Look Out For in 2023 and was honored by the Calgary Black Chambers with a Calgary Black Achievement Award in 2023.
